If you’ve been to any shower or luncheon in the South, chances are you’ve had a version of this appetizer! I added my own spin with a tangy dipping sauce.
Ingredients:
1lb of sausage (I like to get spicy, and preferably local)
12 oz of cheddar cheese, shredded
2 cups self-rising flour
For Sauce:
2 TBSP good mustard
2 TBSP mayo (I only use Primal Kitchen mayo)
2 tsp honey
Instructions:
1.) Preheat oven to 350 degress F. Line a baking sheet with foil for easy clean up.
2.) Combined sausage, cheese, and flour in a large bowl using a hand mixer. Mix until the flour is evenly distributed and you’re able to pinch mixture together. It will look really dry and crumbly, and that’s okay.
3.) Take couple tablespoons of the mixture and roll in your hands to form a ball. A little smaller than a gold ball…whatever that is. A walnut, I guess? Anywho, I got 35 balls out of this batch.
(Greedy kitten not included in recipe)
4.) Stick them in the oven for about 25-30 minutes. They will start to turn slightly golden, but won’t turn very dark.
(I remember the first few times I made these I thought I was really hard to tell if they were finished. When in doubt, just cut one open and double check that the sausage is fully cooked.)
Can be served warm or room temp.
*Tip: After you bake them, these ball freeze really well. You could make a big batch to freeze, and reheat in the oven when you’re ready for them!
5.) For dipping sauce: Combine mustard, mayo, and honey in a small bowl. Serve along balls, and enjoy!
It doesn’t get any easier than this salty bite!
