Sometimes, you just dread walking into your closet. Everything is chaotic, you can’t remember where you put your favorite top, and your whole day is off to a stressful start.
Girl, I’ve been there, too, and I’ve figured out a few things about creating a closet that showcases my wardrobe instead of hides it. So, grab a glass of wine and a girlfriend or two and spend a fun afternoon following these steps to creating a beautifully clutter-free closet!
Create a Clutter-Free Closet
Know Your Style
The secret to a well-functioning, clutter-free wardrobe is to first get a sense of your unique style. Knowing your style will help you cut the closet clutter that you don’t need in your wardrobe and will guide you in purchasing new, on-style items!
Conduct a Closet Audit
This is the fun part! Make three piles: donate, toss, and keep. Take every single item out of your closet (yes, every single one!) and place each one in a pile. Donate the items that are in good condition but don’t align with your style, toss the items that aren’t functional or are dirty, and keep the items you absolutely love.
Store Seasonal Items
Out of sight and out of mind. Box up and store away items you’re not wearing this season. This cuts down on the items taking space in your closet and lets you see the items you need each day!
Stow It Away
Still hanging on to that top your mom bought you two years ago but haven’t worn? Pack away items you’re unsure about tossing in a box and stow it under your bed. If you don’t reach for it in a year, toss away!
Organize by Type, Color & Pattern
Create an organizational system that works for you and stay consistent. Hang items by type, color, pattern or occasion so you can know quickly where an item is when you need it!
Cut the Clutter
Store belts, scarves and other smaller accessories in cute boxes or hang them up on a peg board on the wall.
Give Every Item a Home
Leave no item without a place to live, even down to the accessories! Each and every item should have a home in your closet – and not on the floor!
Make Time to Tidy-Up
Take a few minutes every single evening when you’re putting your clothes away to tidy up and reorganize. A few minutes spent doing this each day cuts down on long hours spent reorganizing each month.
Create a Go-To Look
Create a go-to outfit that aligns with your style! When pressed for time or are overwhelmed with decisions, have this look on hand. Maybe it’s a pair of high-waisted trousers, a blouse, jacket and a piece of statement jewelry – determine a look you love to grab on days when you’re in a rush!
Be Selective
Know your style and be selective and intentional when purchasing new wardrobe items. Know what you need and shop with purpose.
